I definitely agree but also to me, the analyzing and thinking about the book has always been the fun part 😭

as if pleasure and entertainment and joy aren't incredibly precious things to follow in a society that only values "useful" practices

i also think on booktok people act like there is no middle ground. a book can be both, incredibly entertaining and providing escapism from everyday boredom, while also having a deep and thought provoking thematic core / message. additionally, escapism means something different depending on the person; for me, books like the poppy war provide escapism despite dealing with heavy topics regarding historical injustice, since my want for escapism doesn‘t stem from global issues, but from my own personal issues

imo reading alone has a latent ability to subconsciously teach you, even if you’re just reading for fun and not approaching it intellectually. someone who reads 30 books a year, even if they’re not thinking about anything beyond the surface, will probably have better comprehension and analysis skills than someone who hasn’t read a book since high school. but also obvious disclaimers that this is just my opinion and its not always the case etc etc etc

weird question nobody's been able to answer yet. I'm writing a book, and I've been told that 120k words is the hard max for debut fantasy, but I can't find any fantasy (esp. selling well) that is under, even like, 150k. How am I supposed to know what a book that length even looks/reads like when I can't find any?

i almost wish i could mindlessly read books! i take them way too seriously most of the time and tend to overcomplicate what is supposed to be just a hobby 😭

Most people's experience about reading is via school where they are graded on analysis & yes "punished" for poor analysis with bad grades

I love reading in general! I’m an English undergrad and there are sooo many books I love because of how much I have analyzed them. But also I loveee to just turn my brain off and read for fun!

Yep. I just never understand why people can't just divorce the notion of "it's fun and I like it" and "It's culture defining high art". Instead you get half the crowd refusing to engage media that they probably would like because it's not high brow enough, and the other half of the crowd telling you the leprechaun sex book is basically Vonnegut and reading it makes you an intellectual.
