It’s not their retirement benefits it’s if they’re eligible for social security disability or survivors benefits then the state will apply on their and take those funds. It is still wrong but not the same as retirement benefits being lowered decades later.

IDK if it's different in other states but here in PA ssi is not social security. ssi is supplemental security income and has nothing to do with social security. the social security administration only monitor and manage SSI

Social security retirement and SSI are not the same thing. Two separate programs with separate requirements. And yes, some kids in foster care qualify for SSI and some states take a portion of the money to cover the cost ot care. The kids haven’t “earned” this money like if it was a retirement.

Foster kids grow up and find their foster care costs are taken out of their social security so when they retire they get less money eyes because they've paid for it?

Okay I'm confused at what you are saying. Social Security retirement and social security disability (SSDi) are not the same thing as SSI (Supplemental security income). Social security taxes pay for social security retirement and disability, SSI is paid by general funds. So you're saying what? That money the government spent to pay for the child while in foster care is then being taken out of their retirement benefits? Bc if that's what you are saying, that is untrue. In some cases children's services will use Social Security survivors benefits (money to help pay for the needs of the child that is based off of the deceased parents earnings), Social Security dependent benefits (money received for the care of the minor child bc the parent is disabled and based on disabled parent's earnings), and SSI to pay for the child's needs while in foster care. Now if this is what you are talking about, then please know that if a child was in the parents home, all of those things would be spent caring for the child's needs as well. So if this is what you mean by they are paying for their own care, then I disagree bc that money was there to care for the everyday needs of the child. But in no way is a foster child hitting legal retirement age and having money taken from their Social Security retirement check to pay back the government for their care.

The SSI retirement benefit they pay into if they get a job and if it’s still around when they retire is not affected. Other ssi (death benefit/disability) would be accessed to put toward their care. That’s what it’s for though. So what you are saying is essentially not true.

I’m confused. SSD is the retirement system we pay into for retirement. SSI is the welfare program to support those that never worked or worked very little. Most wage earners will never be eligible for SSI benefits.
