There’s a reason Hanson isn’t taken seriously after his first work, Warfare and Agriculture in Classical Greece from 1983, and is seen as a laughing stock. He bases the western way of war on complete nonsense, there was no middle class of greeks. The foundational aspect for his work, the middling farmer didn’t appear until the 6th century BC, with the hoplite body only consisting of limited amount of wealthy land owners.
