me when they gave me an example motion and I copied literally the exact same style/format then they told me they wanted more like a brief but the motion was nothing like that that they gave as an example

I’ve been in law for 14 years, most of it in Biglaw. When new people start to work with me I explicitly tell them what my preferences are- this started several years ago when I started asking senior associates and up to partner people I was working for what their preferences were when I first started working for them. “What are things that are most helpful for you in terms of work product and communication from associates?” I had SO many colleagues find this refreshing and it saved me so many headaches. And even now as a senior person, I get feedback on preferences and approach pointers from more senior people/colleagues who have different specialities/skills than me.

Redlines are not mistakes. It’s our way of teaching. Partners should always redline to help teach and mentor younger associates. A mistake is blowing a deadline or not showing up to a hearing.

The tip is to find people you trust and can talk to — ask other more senior associates for the tips and tricks of working with particular partners. When i was a first year associate a second year associate told me i shouldn’t have left for the day before all the partners did (i left at 530p and had no work lol). This was pre covid. So i went and asked a junior partner who i had a friendly relationship with. Like look if there are unspoken rules i need to know, i don’t know what i don’t know! I also looked for books on it lol! Another tip is to always make sure your car is clean if there’s a chance— even the TOJIEST

First month working as a 23 yr old lawyer… filed a notice of LOA for a singular day on which nothing was even scheduled.. well apparently in federal court you have to file a “motion” for LOA (mind you if not opposed automatically granted)… and the mans entered an Order sanctioning me and requiring me to “show cause as to why I insisted on violating the Court’s local rules”….

I’m not an attorney but I work in litigation support and the way I heard a managing shareholder talk to a brand new associate about the way she ordered colleagues that were cc’d on an email blew my mind. Like whyyyyy??? You’re gonna get the email regardless if you’re the first person listed or the last

Single space after a period vs double. Formatting text as “single spaced” vs “exactly 12pt” whether or not to include COMES NOW at the beginning of your pleadings, what order you cc parties in emails…. ALL LIFE OR DEATH FIREABLE NEVER MAKE THAT MISTAKE EVER AGAIN (every single one is different for every different partner)

Partner to partner preferences are KILLER. I work at a medium-sized firm but I have cases with seven different partners and they all want things done a slightly different way but enough to be inconvenient 😭

let me give you some advice find a good legal secretary or legal Assistant and learn from them because I have been in the industry in complex of litigation for 20 years and 45 year attorney does not know how to properly put together a ex parte and I find that kind of sad.
