PLEASE look up Cathy Freeman's 1996 Stawell Gift run in the 400 metres. She started 54 meters behind and won. It is considered one of the greatest Australian athletic performances ever. Cathy went on to win gold in the 400 meters at the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

The point of the handicap is that every runner puts in 100%. If they all started beside each other Richardson could cruise to a win. But with everyone set at a handicap, everyone has to fight for it

As an Aussie, I’m SO proud of her to have come here and won. She’s truly out of this world. Lowkey obsessed with Sha’Carri!

No, you're not more likely to lose. Each person is meant to finish within centimetres of each other, it's a genuine fight at the finish between all 8 finalists. That's the entire purpose of the Stawell Gift handicap race.

Wait. Is this where the phrase “start from scratch” when describing starting from the absolute beginning or whatnot comes from

This was an early heat - the final was a lot closer. She won it by a head, then a step behind was 3-6 - throw a blanket over them. The handicappers got it right.

stawell local here, Sha'carri did win off scratch which was very impressive however the pictures you're using are of the heats, the semi-final and final were much much closer races and there was also much less of a handicap in the others.

The final is also based on the heats that weekend too. So not just historical races.

Like a golf handicap, makes for better competition and trying to beat personal bests.

when i was a child, our swim club would do this but for the 50m and 100m freestyle. it was a core memory of being like 7 or 8 and finishing at a very similar time as the big older kids. then when i was a big older kid it was a full circle moment doing this with the little kids.

This is a good example of equity in action. The better you are at the start, the more you are punished for it. This is why I don’t like equity, I much rather prefer equality.
