I am beyond upset reading these notes. This is what happens when fear is met with force instead of patience. Trapping a terrified dog, then escalating straight to a catch pole, does not make a situation safer, it creates trauma. A catch pole tightens around a dog’s neck, restricting airflow and putting extreme pressure on the throat and eyes. Dogs panic. Blood vessels burst. Eyes turn red and strained. This is not “handling,” this is overpowering. Now Abel is left with a very swollen muzzle, visible injuries to his mouth, and his paws stained from where he was hurt during the struggle. When I met him today, he was cowering in the corner, trembling, barely able to make eye contact and you could clearly see the burst blood vessels in his eyes. He didn’t come in like this. This happened during intake. Fear was interpreted as aggression, and the response caused harm. To make this even worse, Abel entered the shelter with a much smaller dog who looks like a puppy named Darla and she was also catch poled. Two dogs, already scared, already vulnerable, both handled with force. Dogs pulled from traps are already terrified. Using force on top of fear only deepens the damage — physically and mentally. These notes don’t describe dangerous dogs. They describe dogs pushed past their limits by a system that chose control over compassion. This is not acceptable. This is not humane. And dogs should not leave intake worse than when they arrived. Shelter Notes: 1/5/26 upon intake, dog was appearing to be aggressive by showing its teeth and growling. I then set the trap and went back to my truck. The dog went into the trap and I had to remove the dog with the catchpole. during transfer of truck, dog behaved the same way, aggressive, showing teeth, biting the catchpole. It took two Officers to load the second time around. 1/5/26 - had to use catch pole. could not get age/weight or administer bravecto/pyrantel. he was caught in dog trap. he is bleeding from the mouth from the catch pole #A835293 Abel #A835292 Darla
