Vintage is worth tailoring. The new stuff is typically not. Learn how to do some basic sewing. A shorter hem, adding darts, pretty easy. Sewing your own drapes also easy. Letting out is hard. Shoulders are difficult. Waists depend on the construction, so get a belt.

Also shopping at thrift stores or resale stores look for something that is larger than your size that maybe the design is distasteful to you but the fabric and the print is beautiful you can either use a seam ripper yourself to take it all apart which would save you some money at the Taylor or seamstress or just let them do everything to make it into something that you would like. I do this all the time especially if I find something in a triple extra larger for my small frame I can get two or three outfits out of something that size and there are some really beautiful and expensive fabrics that are used in these outfits that you can buy for cheap and have them reworked.
