I don't think they work for the knight for some evil reason, I think Kris is trying to extend the adventure as much as possible so it never ends. It's thanks to the adventure that Susie and Ralsei are their friends, that they became close to Noelle again, that Berdly can be considered somewhat a friend too and that they can escape from their reality and live in a fantasy while playing a hero. Kris is simply a broken teenager that prefers a dream rather than reality.
