Content aside - I think what you did by intervening, satisfies Immanuel Kant’s categorical imperative. Most other countries have employment standards that require the employer to attempt remedial actions. So if everyone does what you did, it would just become a work culture that has employee rights. Thumbs up.

That one is worth looking up the origin. Even though it is unknown where it originated from. You are correct, it is a cynical idiom. Probably came from an older person because it is an old saying that was popularized at different times. It’s not worth getting upset about. Always do good. Although, I believe the thought process comes from the recognition that often people who do the right thing, get screwed. This does occur more often than it should.

It is true.... Not because good deeds are wrong but it's life in business.... always consult an older person. Nothing new under the sun, they can save you so much stress and being offboarded for exposing company happenings. It is sad but true... always punished for good deeds.
