He was born in Panipat, India, and migrated with his family to Pakistan after the Partition of 1947, eventually settling in Khanewal, Punjab. Later, he moved to Karachi, where he became actively involved in literature, journalism, and television. Widely regarded as one of the most distinguished contemporary Urdu poets, Saleem Kausar is celebrated for his expressive ghazals that explore themes of love, longing, separation, memory, and the complexities of human emotions. His poetry is admired for its simplicity, depth, and emotional resonance, earning him a devoted readership across the Urdu-speaking world. He gained widespread recognition through his famous ghazal “Main Khayal Hoon Kisi Aur Ka, Mujhe Sochta Koi Aur Hai,” which became immensely popular after being performed by leading singers. Over the course of his literary career, he has published several acclaimed poetry collections, including Khali Hathon Mein Arz-o-Sama, Yeh Chiragh Hai To Jala Rahe, Zara Mausam Badalne Do, Mohabbat Ek Shajar Hai, and Duniya Meri Arzoo Se Kam Hai.
