One pattern I’ve noticed after listening to a lot of songs from students and artists: Sometimes the verse, pre-chorus, and chorus all stay in the same part of the singer’s voice. That doesn’t mean the melody is bad—it just may not have enough contrast to make the chorus feel like it has “lift.” Here’s an experiment: Take your chorus and try singing it about a third higher than your first idea. You don’t have to keep it. You’re simply exploring another possibility. Sometimes the melody you’ve been looking for is just outside your comfort zone.
