@baldhearingguy: In our latest "Hearing Aids Tested in Noise" video, we had to make the difficult decision to exclude Toni from participating and sharing her results. Why? Toni has been wearing hearing aids since childhood. Her current hearing aids have been professionally verified and personalized to her unique hearing loss, listening preferences, and real-world needs. Comparing her expertly tuned hearing aids to a manufacturer's First Fit or Quick Fit starting prescription would not have been a fair comparison. In fact, that tells a much bigger story. Manufacturer first-fit settings are exactly that: a starting point. Without verification and fine-tuning, a tremendous amount of performance, speech understanding, comfort, and overall benefit can be left on the table. This is why patients should seek providers who follow best practices in hearing healthcare. Verification measures, including Real Ear Measurements, allow hearing aids to be customized to the individual rather than relying solely on a manufacturer's default settings. Unfortunately, many retail chains avoid investing in the equipment, training, and clinical development required to perform these measures consistently. To make matters worse, managed care plans generally do not compensate providers for performing these best-practice verification procedures. The difference can be significant.
