Nuclear provided energy and resources. AI provides nothing to the average consumer aside from relative convenience. Data centers not only take from resources but they also provide nothing for the areas they are in. It especially doesn’t help that the point that tone def billionaire are pushing is that they need these so they can replace more of us. There is no pro, only cons.

I don’t personally live in an area where data center build-outs are having an immediate negative impact on me or my way of life; financially, or otherwise. That said, my take is 100% build and plan for future compute/capacity needs. On the flip side, I can empathize with communities that have concerns about energy cost increases, water consumption and quality impacts, minimal long-term employment opportunities, etc. I think the city councils approving these contracts should be doing their due diligence and acting with the community’s best interest in mind. In a lot of cases I don’t believe that’s happening. I do think it’s important that when a 500M DC is being considered, a proper panel of experts are enlisted to gauge impacts to the community for the next year, 3, 5, etc. I also think that many individuals are opposed to these DCs simply out of fear that further AI expansion and progress puts their employment and way of life at risk. One might say that the majority of those opposed are fearful of a post-AI world and are somewhat close-minded to the benefits humanity will gain from more compute.

Stopping the development of nuclear technology stunted America's energy growth. Slowing or stopping the development of data centers will stunt America's technological growth and hand the future to the Chinese.
