If you've never heard of a Roti John, you're not alone! Roti John’s is a sandwich shop hidden away just behind Swan Street, along the East Richmond Station train tracks. It opened a year go by owner Noor, who moved to Australia 9 years ago and wanted to bring something different to Melbourne. They specialise in Roti John, one of Malaysia's most iconic street foods. Despite the name, it isn't the flaky roti you might be thinking of. In Malay, roti simply means bread. It’s is made by pressing a bread roll onto an omelette as it cooks before being filled with your choice of toppings. They've switched to brioche rolls, which i think are the perfect match. They're soft, light, not overly sweet and sturdy enough to hold everything together. The sandwiches all start with a very similar base, with the different fillings to set them apart. ⭐️ OG Classic - My favourite. It's simple and lets you taste every ingredient individually.
⭐️ Rendang - Their rich, flavourful rendang takes this one to another level.
⭐️ Golden Hour - Loaded with extra crispy fried chicken.
⭐️ Mushroom - Crispy fried mushrooms instead of chicken. I genuinely think this could convert mushroom haters.
⭐️ Curry Potato Croissant - Packed with flavour and served in one of the flakiest, freshest croissants.
⭐️ Crispy Cauli Florets - Not made in house, but perfectly crispy and absolutely delicious. ✔️ Berry Matcha
✔️ Teh Tarik
⭐️ Milo Dino - I don't think I've had a better one. On weekends they're also serving Nasi Lemak with your choice of rendang or fried chicken, which were fantastic, right down to the rice. They stock a rotating selection of authentic Malaysian sweet and savoury treats, we tried a selection and every one was delicious! It was hard to fault anything here. Everything was packed with flavour, the ingredients were fresh and every dish we tried was executed so well. So underrated! Paid Invite
