Amidst this chaos, a four-piece band from Texas released an album that would permanently alter the DNA of heavy music: Pantera’s Vulgar Display of Power. Following the success of their 1990 major-label debut Cowboys from Hell, Pantera—consisting of vocalist Philip Anselmo, guitarist Diamond Darrell (later known as Dimebag Darrell), bassist Rex Brown, and drummer Vinnie Paul—decided to drop any remaining traditional metal tropes.
