Ok so I don’t love the framing of “positive vs. real stories” as though the positive stories aren’t real? But I do take your point that there’s gotta be more space for the full breadth of how birth can go

I’m not sure this is true. My FYP was inundated with negative, terrible, traumatic birth stories when I was pregnant and it created a ton of stress and anxiety. I actually didn’t see a ton of positive stories at all.

this!!! My birth was so traumatic and unexpected and I feel like all I saw was the “ideal” birth story videos. I’m so hesitant to share about my birth because honestly I don’t have much positive to say lol, which feels weird because my baby is such a blessing and it did all work out in the end. But it was not “the best day of my life” haha

same ❤️🩹 my birth experience was the exact opposite of what i’d hoped for and i felt guilty for mourning the birth i wanted because my baby was perfect and healthy. the best advice i got pp was give yourself grace to mourn that experience you didn’t get.

Also I truly believe two women can have the same due date same kind of birth and similar stories, but having two different experiences and healing journeys. I was really sensitive to people in my life telling me “same” and “yeah I had the exact thing happen to me” cause I felt like noooo it’s not the same cause you aren’t in my body and mind. Idk if that makes sense but it made me feel more isolated than it did like helpful for people to say that

I watched sooo many “positive birth stories” to try and reframe my mindset going into it. and then felt really let down and lonely when my own story felt a lot more negative, traumatic, etc.

I think two people could have very similar experiences and one could find this traumatic and the other not, sometimes birth can be extremely shocking if you aren’t aware of the possibilities. But if we are always blocking out real stories as they are not positive and magical, I think this then leads to shock/disappointment, especially for first time mums where it often doesn’t go to plan

I had a negative experience too. Telling my story is not being negative it’s for educational purposes so people can advocate and make better decisions. My husband is a physician right by my side and it was really hard

Couldn’t agree more and I’m glad you’re speaking about this. My two birth experiences were so massively different from one another. My first experience was a dream, an absolute dream but my second birth was just so impersonal and I was treated badly. It was just awful and it makes me really sad to think about honestly.
