Free will is an illusion because every decision a person makes is the inevitable consequence of causes that existed before they were ever aware of making a choice. Every thought, preference, fear, and desire is shaped by genetics, upbringing, experiences, culture, brain chemistry, and the countless interactions that came before. At no point does a person choose the foundation upon which their decisions are built. If you cannot choose the mind that makes your choices, then you cannot truly claim ownership over the choices themselves. Even the feeling of consciously deciding appears to be a story told after unconscious processes have already begun. If you decide to raise your hand, where did the intention originate? You become aware of the desire to move, but you do not consciously manufacture that desire. Thoughts simply appear in consciousness. No one chooses their next thought before thinking it, just as no one decides what emotion they will genuinely feel in response to an event. Conscious awareness witnesses decisions emerging, but witnessing a process is not the same as authoring it. The illusion becomes even clearer when time is viewed as a single, continuous structure rather than a sequence of moments unfolding independently. If every event follows inevitably from the one before it, then the future is simply the consequence of the past expressed through the present. Under determinism, every action you will ever take was implicitly contained within the initial conditions of the universe. Your sense of “I could have done otherwise” exists only because you cannot perceive the chain of causality that produced your action. If every variable were identical, your choice could never have been different. The argument becomes even stronger if an omniscient creator exists. A being that possesses perfect knowledge of the future knows every thought, action, and decision you will ever make before creating you. If that future cannot be mistaken, then your choices cannot genuinely diverge from what is already known. You experience deliberation and uncertainty, but from the creator’s perspective your entire life is already complete. In that sense, what you call free will is simply the subjective experience of walking a path whose destination has always been fixed. From this perspective, free will is not abolished by force—it simply never existed. Human beings are extraordinarily complex systems governed by causes they neither chose nor control, experiencing the convincing sensation of authorship while reality unfolds exactly as it always had to. Freedom, then, is not the power to create possibilities independently of causation, but the feeling of participating in a process whose outcome was determined long before the individual became aware of it. #giftok #christianity
