My autism was pretty severe and I wasn't diagnosed until I was an adult. It is a well known fact that girls with autism are often not diagnosed until adulthood.

I was responding to the idea that you would have been diagnosed if only you were a boy who couldn’t sit still in class. It’s offensive towards girls who have been diagnosed with autism/adhd at younger ages, young girls were diagnosed in your generation too. Temple Grandin was diagnosed with autism in the 50s ffs. It’s not because we were boyish. It’s possible to speak about the barriers to accessing a diagnosis without dismissing the many girls who have grown up with one. It’s extremely difficult to navigate childhood while requiring extensive supports and being othered in the classroom, and then growing up to see people realizing they’ve also had autism but blaming their lack of diagnosis on the fact they were too well behaved or girly, it pushes away those of us who have been here the entire time. We have already been treated differently and don’t need to be treated that way in our own community.

ADHD here unofficially diagnosed but it was suggested to me by a therapist and I ignored it basically, but then revisited it several years later and delved into it and it explains ALOT, born in 1971 so exactly as you said, would have been diagnosed if I were a boy that was “hyper” and ate too much sugar. But I was quiet and shy and wasn’t a problem for anyone so basically ignored. 🤷♀️not sure it would have benefited me to know it officially.

It’s well documented and many studies show women are under diagnosed or miss diagnosed in many areas particularly with neuro divergent conditions compared to their male counterparts due to inherent gender biases
