@averythepokekid: Avery has had a difficult week. He was briefly discharged for Father’s Day so we could spend some time together as a family. While putting together a video, I found myself editing clips of his first steps as a baby alongside his first independent steps following spinal decompression surgery. As a parent, it’s hard to put into words what it feels like to watch your child learn to walk twice. Unfortunately, the days that followed have been challenging. Over the last several days, Avery’s bilirubin has climbed significantly, and he’s been extremely fatigued—often only awake for a few hours each day. He underwent a liver Doppler, which showed exactly what we already know—his liver is heavily invaded by cancerous tumors. He’s also been battling severe headaches that we still can’t fully explain. Thankfully, a head CT showed no evidence of a brain bleed or tumors, but the headaches continue. What’s always difficult is that Avery rarely follows the script. One day he looks incredibly sick, and the next he’s making jokes with his care team and keeping everyone around him laughing. Today was one of those better days. Avery also completed the simulation for radiation therapy this morning , which helps plan the treatment he’ll begin next week. Just as he’s beginning to recover from chemotherapy and spinal surgery, we’re now preparing for another intensive week of treatment. Back in 2019, Avery underwent 36 radiation therapy treatments (fractions). This time, he’ll receive a similar amount of radiation condensed into just five fractions in hopes of stopping the tumor growth around his spine. We’re preparing for the worst and praying for the best. When radiation ends, another cycle of chemotherapy is already waiting the following week. Sometimes it feels like he never gets a break. For everyone asking about Pokémon videos, they’re coming. Avery has filmed more than I can count. I’ve just been severely behind editing while focusing on his recovery and navigating the many complications that continue to come with treatment.
