@tracy_tysonmd: Most of us grew up thinking libraries were just places to borrow books. But public libraries have always been so much more. The first free public libraries began spreading across the United States in the mid-1800s with a simple but revolutionary idea: knowledge should not depend on your income. Before then, many libraries required paid memberships, making books and education a privilege rather than a public good. Over the next century, libraries became one of America’s greatest equalizers. They offered free access to books, newspapers, educational programs, literacy classes, internet access, job resources, community events, and safe spaces for children to learn and explore. As a pediatrician, I see libraries as a public health resource as much as an educational one. 📚 Reading with young children strengthens brain development and language skills. 📚 Story times promote early literacy and social development. 📚 Summer reading programs help prevent learning loss. 📚 Families who cannot afford to buy books still have access to thousands of them. 📚 Many libraries also provide internet access, homework help, parenting resources, and community connections. A child’s zip code or family income should never determine whether they have access to learning. Libraries quietly improve health, education, opportunity, and community every single day. They ask for very little and give back immeasurably. If you haven’t visited your local library lately, consider stopping by.
