"I don't understand this word. I'm going to Google it!" "I now understand the big word and can continue reading!"

.... A bunch of us use kindles.... which come with built-in dictionaries. You can literally search a "big word" whenever. 😅

English is my third language and the way I was able to learn big words is by reading more and looking them up.

I would gladly take bigger words in exchange for people not using the same one-liners every three pages.😅❤️Its my only pet peeve.

I mostly read in English which is not my native language. Even though I think I am pretty fluent there are some words I just don't know. I either look them up or use the kindle dictionary function

I mean most times I don't know a word... it doesn't even really factor into the story that much. So I just use context clues, and read on 🤷🏻‍♀️

One of the most important thing in books that we enrich ourselves. And learning new words is one of the pillars. I wouldn't read books specifically made with simple words.

The big words made me love reading. As a teen I carried a dictionary around with me 24/7, so if someone said or I heard/read a word I didn’t know I could look it up so I didn’t miss context. I should have known then that I would be a writer.

I started reading books and fanfiction in English back when my English wasn't good. Every time I came across a word I didn't know I'd just google them. Sometimes I didn't even understand the Persian (my first language) translation of the word so i would read the definition. I learned so many new English words this way.

It’s not ableist. Besides we have multiple ways of looking up sentences to learn. I’m not a native English speaker, it’s my third language, so if I don’t understand something, I will ask my

I started learning more "complex" English (aka not curricular) by myself by reading traslations of Linkin Park and Muse's song back when I was 9yo. Started reading and fully understanding books in English at 15yo and started dipping my toes in scientific papers around 17yo. Now when I don't know a word or a cultural reference, I just google it. US people really need a reality check about their education system.

I am a dyslexic woman. I continue to educate myself and expand my vocabulary and knowledge. I am able to achieve this by what I read and the conversations that I have. I would be more insulted if somebody dumped it down because how else will I learn new things or any of us to be honest.

I was reading Adult Fantasy/Scifi as a 10yo (David Eddings, Anne McCaffrey, etc) because that's what my parents had and I was bored with the Children's books, they were too easy for me. I remember getting stuck on words asking my parents and then being directed to a dictionary to look it up. 28years later I stand by this, don't know the word, find a dictionary, be active in your own continued learning.
