It’s not necessarily that they’re putting their workplace first. For many people, it’s simply that they can’t afford to take the time off. Not all employers provide paid leave, so missing work can mean losing income.

I'd leave. I wouldn't be asking permission but would always tell a senior I was leaving for health and safety reasons. You're replaceable at work. Your family need you then you go to them. Kids remember who showed up for them.

This always blows my mind! Employers will replace you, make you redundant and not give you a second thought…. My family always come first. I’m glad I have a great manager. She will always just say “go….we will manage.”. Nothing can replace your family.
