@mercyfullproject: Nobody expects to hear the words “spinal disease” about a dog who’s only 2 years old. But that’s Logan’s reality. This sweet little boy has been diagnosed with IVDD (Intervertebral Disc Disease)— which simply means the cushions between the bones in his spine are weaker than they should be. If one of those discs slips or ruptures, it can press on his spinal cord, causing pain, weakness, or even difficulty walking. But it is NOT the end of Logan’s story. What IVDD means is that Logan’s future family will need to be his protector. They’ll help him avoid jumping off the couch, carry him up and down stairs when needed, keep him at a healthy weight, and recognize the signs if his back ever starts bothering him again. In return? You’ll get a dog who still wants to love with his whole heart. A dog who still deserves adventures, cozy naps, belly rubs, and a forever family that sees him for everything he CAN do— not for the one diagnosis written in his medical chart. We know his diagnosis may shrink his pool of adopters. But we’re still hoping this post might lead him to the right one. Because somewhere out there is someone who understands that “special needs” doesn’t mean “less deserving.” It just means loving him a little more intentionally. 🤍 ‼️This is also why we sometimes require breed-specific experience for dogs in our rescue.‼️ It’s never about gatekeeping a breed; it’s about ensuring adopters understand the unique traits and medical predispositions that can come with them. For Dachshunds and other long-backed breeds, IVDD is one of those realities. While it can’t always be prevented, knowledgeable owners are better equipped to reduce the risk, recognize early signs, and provide the lifelong care these dogs may need.
