When your PCP‘s earliest available appointment is seven months from now, and urgent care tells you they can’t help you genuinely what would you like us to do?

Your Doctor: You need an MRI. Go to the ER, tell them you're having these symptoms. They will get one done.
Patient: okay.

Unfortunately a lot of people don’t have insurance so their only option is ER or they’re genuinely scared. No one purposely wants to spend 5+ hours out of their day at the ER. Wish nurses and docs were more compassionate when it came to this

I’m sorry, but this is just not a valid take in our current healthcare system. Urgent cares are completely understaffed. There’s a lack of PCP’s and the ones we have aren’t even taking new patients most of the time. Where do you want us to go?

I wish hospitals had an ER and an urgent care in one. Actual emergencies funnel to ER and toe pain x3 months funnels to urgent care.

So chronic debilitating pain for over 6mo, hemo work up, rheumo workup- both negative but full body pain- pain mgmt is a 5mo wait, my NP can’t prescribe pain meds soooo I should just suffer???

We have almost ZERO drs accepting patients in my small town. The two accepting patients have a 4+ month wait. I saw several specialists in my lifetime and it was the ER to actually discover I had endometriosis and needed iron infusions. They also help with pain management with my extreme pain.

The public uses the ER as a primary care clinic because PCPs are so hard to get into.

If the ER is for emergencies then the medical field needs to get primary care doctors that actually care is that so hard?

So yes the ER is for emergencies. BUT a lot of rural places don’t have urgent cares or primary care offices- so the closest provider is 2 hours away in a ER.

We also need to understand that an emergency isn’t always life threatening. It’s any condition or state that you cannot safely live at without intervention. Key word, intervention. Someone with a clogged catheter that needs to be replaced, they can’t live like that without it being changed, it’s small, non life threatening immediately, but still needs emergent correction.

You need to be having these conversations with providers who are literally ALWAYS sending patients to the ER

I got sent to the ER from a regular check up looking and feeling perfectly fine. I got taken right back to 3 blood transfusions. We don’t always know what an emergency is or look like we are having an emergency.

idc what people come to the ER for as long as they
1. Dont yell and scream when the wait times are long. We are doing everything we can. We know you are hurting. We know you want to get back. We want you to as well but we only have so many rooms and so many nurses.
2. Dont be mean to staff period.
3. Realize that some people will go back before you even though you got there first bc we are not first come first serve we are acuity based and the sickest go first. Even if theu dont "look sick" to you. ❤️

One of my last coworkers had been fighting insurance for MONTHS for them to cover a specific scan, which was covered according to her plan, but they were refusing. She went to the ER, got the scan, and they covered it at 100%. Sometimes the ER is the only way to make insurance do what it's supposed to

Everytime I go to urgent care they send me to the ER. They always say they don’t have the equipment to help….

Nope, I’m a firefighter, and the ER is for people who feel like they are having an emergency.

What do you do when urgent care tells you to see your doctor, but then you can't see your doctor for months, then where should they go?

You also have to remember that patients don’t know IF they’re having an emergency. Being sick with the flu is scary and you might feel like you’re dying but they aren’t the medical professional. The purpose of the ER is to stabilize but also reassure patients they aren’t dying. It’s equal parts physical emergencies and emotional reassurance

i have a walk in clinic near by but their hours are limited, and going to Urgent Care often results it just being told to see your primary or they send you to the ER anyway.
from my understanding Urgent Care is primarily for if youre sick with infection and need meds that day no?

Not necessarily true. And in a lot of cases, PCPs send there patients to the ERs and in other cases Urgent Cares aren’t able to treat like the ER can

We don’t have medical degrees. We do not now what is emergency. We only know what is painful and we need something to get it under control. Most of us do not know symptoms of what might be causing pain. Let just put 3day pain meds in a vending machine so we can figure out if it is emergency.
