They believe everything they are told without question. The narcissist paints you as unstable, ungrateful, or cruel, and they accept it as fact. They do not investigate, they do not ask for your side, they just defend. When you realize their loyalty is based on manipulation, not truth, you stop taking their opinions personally. Second, they take what you say about the narcissist as a personal attack. If you speak up about your experience, they react as if you insulted them. That is because their identity is now tied to defending that person. The key here is simple: do not over explain. You do not need to convince someone who has already chosen a side. Third, they act as proxies and enablers. Instead of the narcissist confronting you directly, the flying monkey delivers the message. They guilt trip you, pressure you, or try to “fix” things on behalf of the narcissist. This is control by extension. When this happens, set clear boundaries. A calm “This is between me and them” is powerful. You are not obligated to engage. Fourth, they continue the control even after you cut contact. You block the narcissist, but the flying monkeys keep calling, texting, checking your social media, reporting back. They become ongoing extensions of surveillance and manipulation. This is where self protection matters. Limit what you share, tighten your privacy, and reduce access. Peace requires protection. Fifth, they amplify the abuse and isolation. Through selective storytelling, they recruit others. They repeat half truths and twisted narratives until you feel surrounded. This is designed to make you doubt yourself. Do not fall for it. Stay grounded in your reality. Keep receipts if needed. Talk to safe, neutral people who value facts over drama. Here is the truth: flying monkeys only have power if you keep trying to win them over. You protect yourself by stepping out of the triangle. No defending, no arguing, no chasing approval. Focus on your healing, your growth, and your boundaries.
