Coffins that were meant to remain hidden forever now rest in plain sight, their craftsmanship still visible as the crypt gradually surrenders its secrets. The fancy brass handles, once a sign of wealth now on show for all to see. The crypt reflects a distinctly Victorian approach to death and security, shaped by a deep fear of grave robbers and body snatching, with some chambers fitted with viewing windows so families could reassure themselves that the deceased had not been disturbed or stolen after burial. Highgate has long been shrouded in darker stories. Beyond its remarkable monuments, it's been the setting for tales of grave robbers, Victorian funeral practices, and, decades later, the infamous "Highgate Vampire" panic that drew occult hunters and turned the cemetery into one of Britain's most legendary gothic locations.
