The whole reason why these games were so different and the rebellion succeeded before the capitol could truly recognize it and crush it was because of rue and Katniss’s alliance being so different than previous ones. Everyone else formed temporary alliances to ensure survival past the first few days but they knew at some point they would have to split up. Katniss allied with rue knowing she would do whatever it took to get rue into the last 2 standing and that Katniss would have given her life if it meant rue got to go home. It was compassion and love and humanization that the capital never saw coming and when it happened, it was too late for them stop it. Katniss humanized rue to the entire capitol and made it so they couldn’t reduce her to a district number, to a contestant in the hunger games. She made them realize she was just a little girl no different than their own little children. No different than the little girl in the yellow coat.

The entire point of Katniss POV wasn’t that Katniss needed to go home to Primm, it was that to Katniss Rue was Primm if she hadn’t been there to volunteer

She would never harm her bc she knows what it would mean for Rue’s family back in 11, if she could win and her siblings never have to put their name in more times just to eat, she would pick that in a second. Prim had Gale, her mom, and a whole town that loved her. Katniss wouldn’t hesitate to let Rue win

It’s because they miss the point of Gales character. Katniss would’ve let rue win because she knew Gale would take care of prim, it’s explicitly stated that’s why he didn’t volunteer with her in the books.

She is explicitly says that she wanted rue to win if she couldn’t and after rue dies she says that if she couldn’t win she wanted thresh to. Her chosen “successors” that if she were to have died were both of district 11’s tributes. More so in the beginning of the book she wanted Peeta to win if she couldn’t and a bit later in the book she says this again somewhere in the time of her being with him in the rocks.

Katniss never seeked comfort,she only seeked to protect the one's she cares for,which included her community. Ofc she has much better chance to win againts Rue technically. But she would've let Rue win for the same reason she volunteered in place for Prim. She didn’t volunteer thinking she has better chance to win,she did it knowing she will most likely die and just wanted to save Prim.
