I remember studying the notion of sprezzatura in Italian Renaissance era (yes, 16th century) etiquette books, 25 years ago in university. I never forgot it, but thought it would be one of those fabulous, but rare and ignored bits of knowledge I’d never again hear about. I’m so glad people are made aware of it. Thank you sm!!

So how do we counteract this? Because I want people to try. I want them to reach, to want more or new or different things. I want them to try, I want them to fail, I want them to try again. I want them to try in new ways, to embrace setbacks, to keep inventing and reinventing, themselves, the world around them, their place in the world. How do we as a society lower the social burden of trying? How do we as individuals make it less socially expensive to try?

Not all creators are created equal. Some have an intrinsic quality or skill that is naturally embraced by others. Others create content for themselves, like a social media scrapbook that may or may not be embraced by others. Both can be cool or cringe. Both can go viral (but only one of them cares if they don’t).
