Play helps build important social-emotional, cognitive, language and self-regulation skills. Rough play is the first and most consistent way we taught our kids about consent. The play and especially tickling stopped immediately when they said, and we would point that out to them in an age appropriate way.

The same creator has a video how rough play can help teach consent. When the toddler says “no” or “down,” they immediately stop. Dad also calls timeout to take a breath, so it’s not just a one way street.

Notice how dad is using the couch and ottoman as padding to prevent injury. Not a lot of force. Great job dad! Kid is laughing and obviously trusts you.

We call this “yeet” so when the baby comes over and says YEET! We know what they’re asking for. The giggles are the best

it just makes sense. its big sensory input which is good for them, its silly bonding moments and trust building, and it shows them safe healthy ways to test limits and check in and learn about consent in just a fun intuitive way.

My granddbaby just turned 1, she loves the rough housing. Once she felt solid, we started doing little things. She has a blast.

God I miss these days with my kids. “Rough” play was the best. The giggles, smiles, and connection is just awesome.

My husband does this kind of stuff with our daughter and it drives his parents nuts. They get so nervous but I trust him. He even fell in the grass once and he prioritized the toddler’s safety over his own. They were both fine, don’t worry!

My son loved to play like that when he was a toddler. He’s autistic and I think he liked the sensory input. He’s 19 now and loves to be hugged tightly.

My daughter was a premie and has an under developed vestibular system due to being in the NICU. Her OT highly encourages this kind of rough play or “dad play” to help!! It’s been really beneficial!!
