shown is the word i keep returning to and i think it is more specific than it sounds. not told. not reminded. not reassured. shown. and the difference between being told something and being shown it is the difference between a description of water and water. i was told things in those first weeks. i was told by people who loved me and by the internet and by the collective wisdom of everyone who had been through this before me and wanted to reach back and offer what they had learned from the other side. you are not alone. other moms feel this way. it gets easier. the village is out there. all of it true. all of it told. and all of it landing at the surface of the thing and sliding off because told things require a bridge between the telling and the believing and at 3am in the first weeks that bridge was out. i did not have the internal architecture to convert told into believed. the gap between here is the information and here is what i know in my body to be true was too wide to cross on words alone. and shown does not need the bridge. shown goes directly. shown is the map with the lights on it, is the visual proof that lands before the interpretation can intercept it, is the thing that does not ask your belief to do the work of crossing a gap because there is no gap. there is just the thing itself, in front of your eyes, already true before you have decided anything about it. i needed to be shown. someone should have shown me. i am showing you now. #postpartum #newmom #postpartumsupport #momtok #momlife
