If you plug your phone into the USB ports of a car you don't own, you may be exposing a ton of data about yourself, your contacts, and your text messages to the car's infotainment system. USB carries power and data. When you link it to a car, it can pull all of that ton of information into the infotainment system and store it indefinitely. In a rental car, you need to make sure to delete that information when you're done with the rental. Remove your phone and then purge the contacts and call history. In a rideshare, this won't be possible so avoid plugging it in at all.
