Icmp can also be used for router advertisements in IPv6. My opinion: ping should always work, many not on the wan side of a router, but everywhere else

Sometimes tcp and udp probe attempts are referred to as pings too. The Cisco ASDM app for ASA firewalls calls it that, for example.
