The Spring Budget is being announced today and it’s thought that cuts to the benefits system will go deeper than first thought. This overhaul of the benefits system will result in an estimated 1.2 million disabled people losing eligibility for their personal independence payments (Pip). I’m so glad we got a chance to speak about this on This Morning last week and I wanted to share my thoughts. What I don’t get is why governments seem to always punch down - we should all be horrified about this. Any one of us reading this could become sick or ill - or have to care for someone who is - in our lifetime. And I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t be able to survive financially without support if that were to ever happen. I hate this rhetoric that people are not deserving of support - these cuts could kill people or make life harder for anyone already struggling. Personally I want to live in a society that helps vulnerable people. The system is already stacked against people with disabilities. Cutting benefits isn’t going to stop people being disabled. It just punishes people who deserve support. It doesn’t solve systemic issues - like the barrier disabled people face to employment like inability to work from home, lack of accessible commuter routes, inaccessible work spaces or or discrimination. These cuts will lead to increased poverty, food insecurity, housing and financial security - and that’s before we get onto how it will impact their physical and mental health. It feels so disappointing to come from this government! Punching down isn’t going to improve our healthcare or make more affordable housing or reduce crime. 💔 #fyp
