There wasn't joined up thinking like there is now and civilizations used to do their own thing and then get taken over by other civilizations and sometimes the knowledge got lost that's my thoughts on it, interesting though.

mhh terra australis is a hypothetical mass to be counter mass to the northern explorerd lands.Thats the reason the map doesn't show the exact coastlines. They already knew the globe shape of the earth so they thought there has to be a counter mass in the southern hemispher. And the shore line has more in common with australia than antarctica 😏
