I think it is a leftover feature from the original Sony Nintendo CD model, and that was never removed when Sony started manufacturing the Playstation

I think it's because Nintendo and PlayStation were in a partnership to make a "Play-Station" console, but when Nintendo were supposed to announce it, they didn't and ditched Sony. Leaving Sony with pretty much everything and they worked away with it
