Last Thursday dealt a double blow to our SDS Family. We started out our day saying good-bye to Brownie, who had been fighting a cancer diagnosis since the end of 2022. Our hearts were broken a second time when we realized that our sweet Gabriel’s recent cancer findings had already bested his body and he was ready to go over the bridge. Gabe’s last day was spent surrounded by his favorite volunteers doting over him, petting him, giving him lots of kisses, and whispering sweet nothings into his ear. Staff held him as he was released of his failing body. Gabe came to the Sanctuary at the beginning of this year. His dad, who had raised him as a puppy, had passed away Christmas morning, and he had nowhere to go. 💔 It didn’t take long for Gabe to win over every single person he met! His goofy attitude, loving demeanor, soulful eyes, and derpy smiles made him absolutely impossible to resist. Gabe was always the dog that everyone wanted to walk & hang out with. When his mobility began to decrease as his arthritis advanced, there wasn’t a single complaint about just sitting and cuddling with him instead. A lover of all stuffies and balls, Gabe had a list of his favorites, and everyone knew which order he preferred them in. Always able to turn your frown upside-down, Gabe loved with his whole heart, and we all loved him back with ours. A lot of times, people say thank you for what you do for them. Maybe it’s selfish, but the secret is, we do it because of what they do for us. Each dog who walks through the doors touches us in some way, teaches us lessons of life, perseverance, strength, love, joy, pain, sadness, grief – the fragility of life and how quickly it all passes by. They teach us to live each day to the fullest, let go of yesterday and enjoy what is right in front of you today. Appreciate naps, cuddle often, or sometimes even that it’s good to have some alone time. Don’t let small things stand in your way, and so many things are really much smaller than you think in the grand scheme of things. Don’t hold grudges, but steer clear of mean people. Always show your family and friends you love them. Eat well and snack often. Appreciate today because tomorrow is never promised. It happened too fast, and we were not ready. But we will never forget our sweet angel Gabriel or the message that he, and so many others have taught us. We allow our hearts to break, not only so theirs do not, but also because they make ours grow so much more than we ever thought possible. Run free of pain, Gabe – we know Val and your Dad were there waiting for you on the other side. 🤍🩵💙🌈 #SeniorDogSanctuaryMD #Gabe #Gabriel #AngelGabriel #runfree #seniordogs #saveseniordogs #worthit #wouldntchangeathing #lifelessons #rainbowbridge #rainbowbridgedog
