If you see a dog wearing a bright red vest that says “IN TRAINING -🚫 IGNORE 🚫, why are you approaching the dog or the handler in the first place? Read the vest and move on. I don’t want kids screaming, running up to my dogs, or putting their faces inches away from them. About the first kid everyone keeps bringing up: yes, he asked. But he approached my dogs before asking. The order is simple: Ask first. Then approach if the owner says yes. The dad handled it like an adult. He wanted to understand why I said no, and we had a respectful conversation. That’s how grown-ups solve things. I’m not a free petting zoo or a free dog education class. I’m in that store because it’s pet friendly, it has AC, and the store has given me permission to train, record, relax, and spend time there with my dogs. My dogs being in public is not an invitation for you or your kid to touch them. If your kid approaches my dogs in a way I’m not comfortable with, I’m going to say NO. And no is a complete sentence. Learn to accept rejection. If you want to pet a dog, adopt one, visit an adoption center, or ask the owner before approaching. They may say yes, or they may say no. Respect the answer and move on. Oh, and before the grammar police show up: yes, English isn’t perfect. Sometimes I get nervous and mess up what I’m trying to say. The father understood me perfectly, and that’s the only conversation that mattered.
