@hikingandhistory: Did you know Chester Cathedral is home to one of England’s finest and most interesting surviving medieval shrines? Built around 1340 to honour Saint Werburgh, Chester’s patron saint, this incredible monument attracted pilgrims from across medieval England before being smashed during Henry VIII’s Dissolution of the Monasteries. Although her relics were lost forever, the shrine itself was painstakingly reconstructed and still stands today. I was there on Good Friday. It was an overwhelming experience to see the shrine. I’m Catholic, it’s a survivor, my local church is named for st Werburgh
