@growwithkaela: A DA loves you at the only capacity they know. And that capacity is limited not by how much you mean to them, but by how little they know themselves. Dismissive avoidants were emotionally neglected as children, which translated to them that they must be defective and therefore unlovable. So they created a persona that grew over the years based on external validation, while overshadowing their true, authentic self. You can't offer depth to someone else that you've never accessed within yourself. And you can't offer the kind of love you've never allowed yourself to receive.
How I feel after dealing with a dismissive avoidant for over a year

This absolutely feels like my husband. He has that type of childhood trauma. He’s a good guy, and loves me the best way I think he knows how. It’s devastating because it still not nearly enough. Almost no deep emotional connection, warmth or touch. I don’t feel cherished or desired. I feel barely tolerated.

But why can they show it in the begining of the relationship and than they cut it off just like that?

Can they change though? Our core fight for almost a decade has always been me feeling he is not emotionally deep enough. Intimate enough. He doesn’t analyze where he’s gone wrong or why something happened. It’s like he can’t go there. He can’t even watch sad movies. He doesn’t like to be vulnerable. As a result I shut down. I match his energy. He says “you knew who I was when you married me” and “I can’t change. IT’s like me asking you to be less emotional.”

my dismissive avoident had weaponised incompetence and I had no choice but to carry the mental, financial and emotional load for 25 years. i finally walked away this year... i am 42 now with 4 young adult kids.
everyone talks about the DAs independence... my ex was anything but independent. I thought if I did more, he would step up... my tank ran empty and I am finally free!
the thing is that I am afraid to get into another relationship!

This describes my husband exactly. I do feel he loves me but I also feel he's at his capacity. I wish it was more.

He loved me more than anyone but his capacity never increased because he would deactivate the minute he felt any discomfort.

Exactly how you said.
I'm the complete opposite and feel broken for not running away before feeling so deeply involved.
I realize after 8 years that this person has no clue of what love really means... All that counts for him are HIS need and HIM SELF. I had no idea people like that existed. No feelings at all. Just surface.

Thank you Kaela for the sobriety 🙏 These people want to be treated in a way that only a Non-Avoidant can. Its a double standard.
