Beyoncé “Take my hand, Precious lord” 57th Annual Grammy Awards 2015 The 57th Annual Grammy Awards on February 8, 2015, occurred during a period of intense social unrest in the United States, following the 2014 deaths of Eric Garner and Michael Brown. Beyoncé’s performance of “Take My Hand, Precious Lord” served as a deliberate bridge between the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and the contemporary Black Lives Matter movement. “Take My Hand, Precious Lord” was born out of unimaginable loss. In 1932, Thomas A. Dorsey received word that his wife, Nettie, had died during childbirth. The very next day, his newborn son passed. In the middle of that grief, he didn’t write a performance piece ,he wrote a prayer. A plea for strength when there were no words left. That prayer became one of the most important songs in Black church history. Then came Mahalia Jackson, whose voice carried it beyond the church walls and into the national consciousness. She anointed it, and through her, the song became a standard that generations would turn to in their heaviest moments. But its deepest historical weight is tied to Martin Luther King Jr.. It was his favorite hymn. On April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Dr. King asked that “Take My Hand, Precious Lord” be sung at a rally that evening. Hours later, he was assassinated. In many ways, that song came to hold the final breath of the civil rights movement’s greatest voice Now place that moment in its time. America was grieving again , Eric Garner’s final words echoed across a nation, Michael Brown’s body lay in the streets of Ferguson, and Tamir Rice, just 12 years old, lost his life in Cleveland within seconds of police arriving. Grand juries declined to indict, protests rose in every direction, and Black Lives Matter became a national cry. The grief in the Black community was suffocating and while many with influence stayed silent, Beyoncé chose intention, reaching back to a song born from Black grief, carried through faith, and rooted in our history That’s what Beyoncé chose to carry onto that stage🐝 #beyonce #grammys #takemyhand #beyhive #2015
