Your API depends on another API. That API's DB is in deadlock. What do you do? This is a real scenario from Staff Engineer interviews. "We'd fix the bug" or "we'd contact the other team" are not the answers interviewers are looking for. They want to know how your system handles the failure on its own — regardless of when the other team resolves their problem. The complete answer has 4 layers: → Circuit Breaker: when failures exceed a threshold, open the circuit and fail fast. No more hanging requests waiting 30s for a timeout that will never come. → Retry with exponential backoff + jitter: when you do retry, wait longer between attempts and add randomness. Jitter prevents the thundering herd — all instances hammering the recovering service at exactly the same time. → Fallback strategy: reads fall back to cached Redis data with a staleness indicator. Writes go to a queue and are processed when API2 recovers, using idempotency keys to prevent duplicates. → Bulkhead: isolate API2's thread pool so its failure can't exhaust resources across your entire system. The detail most devs skip: jitter. Everyone knows backoff. Few mention jitter. That one word is what separates a textbook answer from a production-aware answer. Save this before your next Staff Engineer interview. Follow @capacitadev for weekly Senior and Staff level interview prep.
