From the sixteenth century onwards they have flowed in successive waves into the main plateau of Abvssinia and have occupied great parts of the southerr highlands, leaving the aboriginal population scattered ir enclaves cut off from one another and from the semitized population of the central highlands ; it is in large measure due to the Galla invasions that the aboriginal population of the south has not been assimilated lke that of the central highlands. Some Galla tribes have even penetrated into he central highlands; the Wollo Gallas, for instance, have planted themselves between Shoa and Amhara. The Gallas werc pagans when they invaded the country and for the most pait remain so in practice. Some tribes, like the Wollo, have become fanatical Moslems. Others have received a faint tincture of Christianıty honouring Jesus and Mary among their gods The centre of gravity of the Abyssinian kingdom has steadtly moved southwards. The capital, originally at Axum in Tigré, has moved gradually to places farther south. For a while it was in Gondar, in Amhara north of Lake Tsana. At the end of last century it was fixed at Addis Ababa in Shoa. The Abyssinian kings gradually lost control of northern Tigré. Massaua was occupied by the Moslems, and the Nubian Beja tribes overran the coastal districts. At the present day the northern half of Tigré is included in the Italian colony of Critrea; 1ts population is, however, still to a large extent Abyssinian in language and in religion. The core of the Abyssinian kingdom has been from the Middle Ages and still is the central highlands, Amhara, Gojjam, Shoa, and southerr Tigré.
