I hear what you’re saying, and I acknowledge that it is really bad for you. The thing is though I’ve heard this for a decade and you still aren’t prepared. That’s the sticking point. These are no longer anomalies; this is just summer now.

I grew up in New Orleans. A very very hot and very very humid place to live. We had no AC in our schools. We just dealt with it.

It’s 95 in most states in America right now. You guys need a/c

Yeah I’ve been seeing these complaints each summer since I got TikTok 6 years ago. I’m really confused why people aren’t prepared by now. This isn’t an anomaly anymore! I’m also confused why the government isn’t stepping in and giving people ac units. This seems like what would be a FEMA level issue in the US.

Sitting in New York, in a house without AC, looking at next week’s triple-digit weather (yes, that’s Fahrenheit), in a home literally designed to trap heat (yes, red brick homes are a thing), because we live in the snowiest city in America—and some years, the world—and wondering why the UK and France doesn't do what NY state does and set up cooling tents and emergency shelters for people without AC. Again: many homes built to hold heat through eight months of snow do not have AC in NY. Add in the absurd electric bills (plenty of New Yorkers saw $700 monthly bills), and yet we still find ways to survive temperatures that reach over 100 degrees (37 °C) and 20+ below zero (-28 °C) Fahrenheit.

Yeah we have days that hot for weeks and months in the summer in California. I just don’t understand how AC is so controversial. It’s really weird

I think that this is the disconnect and why people are fighting over this. The narrative from most, not all, people from the UK is that the UK weather is hotter and more miserable that in the US. That simply isn’t true in most cases. However if instead of making that claim they instead simply said, as you have, that your infrastructure and power grid were not built for extreme heat and that you couldn’t get AC because of environmental impact laws and the drain on the power grid more Americans would be more understanding and not turn it into a competition. We love and competition. Thank you for a calm explanation of some of these points. It’s 97 in FL today so we win lol. Jk have a great day

Aircon: I get it about not wanting to invest in a device you only need a week a year in your home. But why oh why do public schools, hospitals, libraries not invest in it as a public good. It could save lives, no?

Okay, miss ma’am…here’s my rebuttal…1. We are broke. We are all broke. A lot of us are going without ac. And 2. It’s time you guys start planning and following through with some infrastructure and power grid changes. Because it’s happening. I have heard of your heat waves for years in a row now..this isn’t a surprise anymore. You’ve lived through this heat wave before. I suggest you guys start planning for next summer, because I would bet you that next summer you will have another crazy insane out of this world heat wave. I do wish you well though! It is hot and it sucks not having ac. Get your wrists, feet, elbows cold first. It cools you down the fastest. I hope your government starts planning!

94 melts your roads? what are they made of? That’s an average summer day where I grew up and we didn’t have AC for many years. We put foil on the windows. We closed the windows and blinds early in the morning and opened the windows and put fans in the windows at night when the temp went down in the evening. when it was in 100’s my mom would get a block of ice and put it in front of a fan to cool down the family room.

Sounds like you should insist on a/c just like electricity and plumbing

We aren’t making fun of suffering. We agree that 35C is hot. What baffles us are the statements “no, you don’t understand, can’t comprehend how hot it is here!” Like. No. It’s hotter in the USA, we get it lol. Also where did this myth come from that all Americans have a/c. In Michigan it also gets that hot but only 60% of people have central air, more people might have just like one room with a window unit for a little reprieve.

This has been happening for the last decade at least. I’m sure longer. I was in London in 2015 and this was an issue then. I think investing in a unit for the summer is necessary.

it is hard. get fans. fans will help with evaporation and that will make it cooler. I dont make fun of people dealing with heat or cold. there are portable units that can help.

My Victorian home in America was built in 1867. It was modified to have central air. It can be done you just need to be willing to do it.
