@doctor.atinuke: “Why don’t doctors just make the appointments longer?” It’s a fair question. The answer is that most physicians have a lot less control over their schedules than people realize. I’m not trying to justify long wait times or tell anyone they shouldn’t be frustrated. I’m simply trying to explain why they can happen. If there’s something you’ve always wondered about primary care or how it works behind the scenes, leave it in the comments. I might make a video about it. #PrimaryCare #FamilyMedicine #DoctorLife #Healthcare #BehindTheScenes
Not to mention, if you make appointment times longer, it cuts down the amount of patients you can see in a day, so patients are waiting even LONGER for an appointment

Our organization has 0% concern for continuity. So I may be seeing pts from all different clinics (all primary care) only to find out my patients had to drive 45 minutes to see someone at one of our other clinics. It’s maddening

the docs I work with get either the 20/40 or 30/60 template (minutes for established/new patients). those are the only options they get. sometimes they add extra clinic days, but they also have to round in hospital, be in procedures, be on consult. they book out so far but when you are 1 person, there is no other way.

I am a practice manager for a family medicine practice. Our providers have a lot of control, but the reality is insurance companies don't pay us double for a 30 minute appointment vs a 15 minute. Between overhead and salaries, it just doesn't work to only have 30 minutes appointments. I wish patients could see what I see. Primary Care doctors truly care about their patients. No one goes into family medicine for the money. With insurance companies and quality programs they are inundated with paperwork, messages, and charting. It's draining and most of the work 7 days a week, vacations, and holidays. Doing all of these while now feeling like a villain with patients is draining.
