@theotherhistoryofmorocco: Arabization was not a single event. It was a process that unfolded over centuries. Generation after generation, we stopped speaking the ancestral language. Our history has been rewritten to give the impression that the Arabs brought civilization to us. But even the famous Muslim historian Ibn Khaldun described the Arabs Banu Hilal as locusts who destroyed the infrastructure of the Berber dynasty, plundered and ravaged cities, and enslaved people. In the modern era, many North African states strengthened this process through policies of Arabization in schools, public administration, and the media. National identity was often presented primarily as Arab, while Indigenous Amazigh history and languages received little recognition or were actively marginalized. The result is that millions of Indigenous North Africans today sincerely identify as Arabs. That identity is real for those who hold it. But it is also the outcome of a long historical process that transformed languages, cultures, and identities over many centuries. #arab#amazigh#colonization#conquest#northafrica
