Red Dead Redemption 2 is incredible and about grief in a roundabout way. it's super super good and also made by Rockstar (gtaV). highly recommend that game. it's beautiful.

If you like spiritfarer and you want a shorter game that is also about grief, try What Remains of Edith Finch. One of my favourites ever and I cry when I even think about the ending

Hi! I work in video games and also am in the dead dads club. Recommendations for you specifically based on what you shared here and in part 1: Portal for sure (and then Portal 2). The game is a little bit older so the barriers to entry are lower, and the tutorial is thorough. GRIS is a visually stunning game about grief. Folks recommending Horizon Zero Dawn are right. It's a beautiful game and the story is fantastic. I would say it's closest to God of War in terms of difficulty. Islanders is a truly cozy game and is deeply relaxing, as is Dorf Romantik. Thomas Was Alone is also REALLY good. But if you play one thing on this list, it's gotta be GRIS. If you play two, do Portal.

I would HIGHLY recommend Unpacking, it's a light puzzle game where you uncover the story of the person you're playing as by unpacking all of their moving boxes through different years of their life and figuring out where everything goes. I cried the first time I finished it, and it was great.

you should try Undertale and Deltarune, they're both made by the same guy and they're both amazing in they'r own ways and both have amazing music, Deltarune is not finished yet though, it's chapter based and the 5th chapter released only a couple days ago, the first two chapters are free though so if you won't like it you don't have to buy the rest

You should add Horizon Zero Dawn to your list. The story is just an incredible social commentary on capitalism and automation and human ego. It’s also told in a way where you sort of piece it together from bits of information you find until the revelation comes. Also robot dinosaurs.

If you like games that discuss grief and grieving, Expedition 33 will probably be right up your alley. Game of the Year last year (by miles) and the entire story centers around grief and how we all cope with death. Plus the soundtrack is worth listening to on its own.

the Horizon games!! open world, intriguing storyline, female protagonist, cool combat (mostly archery). get a switch so you can play Zelda! (both breath of the wild and tears of the kingdom). botw was my first game (also started gaming after my dad died) and it's one of my comfort places that I return to all the time. it's beautiful, simple enough to get good at it with practice, but still offers a challenge, and super flexible. depending on how you play, it can be grindy, comfort, beat em up, exploration, etc. lots of puzzles and problem solving, which I love! assassin's creed. it's a beast to tackle and you have to figure out where you want to start based on your play style preferences. I'm an open world girly and LOVE odyssey. I love Greek mythology, the female main character is phenomenal, the story is so cool, the combat is a good balance of simple enough to learn, but still challenging.
