However, in the mid-20th century, a small number of house finches were released in New York and they have spread across almost all of North America. House finches typically live up to 10 years. This longevity is similar to related species such as the purple finch, which can live to about 11 years. These birds have a great memory and can remember exactly where they passed a source of food. Unlike many other bird species, male house finches don't inherit their red hue from their parents but get it from their diet. The red color comes from carotenoid pigments found in certain fruits and plants, and this color varies with diet.
