@cbsla: A juror has provided her reaction after a mistrial was declared Firday in the arson trial for Jonathan Rinderknecht, whom prosecutors accused of setting a fire on New Year’s Day 2025 that eventually became the deadly Palisades Fire. One juror, who gave the name Syrina, explained why, in her opinion, the lack of more specific phone data and the use of ChatGPT prompts didn’t help the prosecution’s case, resulting in a 10-2 vote in favor of the defense and a hung jury.

She brings up a important point though, it is up to the state to prove the crime at hand, not whether someone is capable of doing something, but whether they actually did something

I think she’s simply expressing an understanding of where people are in today’s society. We are living through a loneliness epidemic, and she’s acknowledging that many people turn to things like ChatGPT during difficult moments. That isn’t evidence of criminal intent. She wasn’t defending anyone’s actions. She was saying that, as a juror, you need evidence that proves guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. That’s exactly how the justice system is supposed to work. The law requires impartiality, not assumptions. If we start treating ordinary behavior, like using ChatGPT for support, as proof of guilt, we’ve abandoned the standard of evidence that protects everyone. Empathy and due process are not mutually exclusive.
