I’m Haitian and married to a Black American. Whenever I see racist comments directed at Black Americans on social media, it genuinely hurts me. I often feel compelled to defend them because that’s how deeply connected I feel. We share the same African ancestry, the same skin color, and a history marked by slavery and oppression. Our ancestors were taken from Africa in chains and brought across the Atlantic. We shouldn’t let ourselves be divided simply because some of our ancestors ended up in what became one of the world’s wealthiest countries, while others were taken to places that later struggled with poverty and poor governance. At the end of the day, we are one people with shared roots, shared blood, and a shared history.

There is no Black nation with a history more closely connected to African Americans than Haiti. Our stories are different, but our struggles have often been shaped by many of the same forces. We understand each other because we’ve both faced oppression, discrimination, and the constant fight to define ourselves on our own terms. Division has always been one of the most effective weapons used against us. We are encouraged to see each other as rivals instead of allies. Haitians are stereotyped as poor, dirty, and hopeless. African Americans are constantly reminded that if they demand too much, they’ll end up the same way. Meanwhile, we’re pushed into believing we’re somehow better than one another, while the people benefiting from that division continue to disrespect both of us. Too often, the brightest minds are pulled away from their communities. Talented Haitian youth leave for France, Canada, or the United States because opportunities at home are limited. Many successful African Americans also leave the neighborhoods that raised them, sometimes because that’s where the opportunities are, sometimes because staying can come with real risks. The result is often a loss of talent and leadership in the very communities that need it most. Black people everywhere have incredible potential. Imagine what we could accomplish if we spent less time divided and more time building together—investing in our communities, supporting one another, and creating opportunities for the next generation instead of allowing stereotypes and division to define us. Wake up. Unity has always been more powerful than division.

I respect Black Americans because they have also suffered from racism. We are all Black, and throughout history, no matter what country we come from, Black people have faced racism. I don't think any Black person should forget where they came from. That's why we should be proud of who we are and stand together as one community, because we've been through a lot in this world.

Thank you, sis. We shouldn't judge all Haitians because of what some individuals say or do. In my experience, Black American women are often the ones who compliment my hair when I'm out, and I've always appreciated that kindness. Not all Haitians think the same way, just like not all Black Americans do. We can't put everyone in the same boat because of the mistakes or opinions of a few. There's good and bad in every community, and it's important to judge people as individuals.
