Tbh I really do think makeup, hair, & fashion has a bigger influence on how people looked than we think. Also micro-expressions — i feel like back then, people were more reserved with their smiles/facial expressions since back then cameras were a big ordeal meaning candid photos weren’t as easy to take

Different trends, stricter diets, also filters and camera quality changes people perception about nostalgia. If you were to take a photo of a nuclear family in the 50s on a iPhone it would look like a cosplay.

Most of it has to do with the camera quality! Of course they were attractive but super crystal clear cameras that pick up on anything instead of cameras that smooth every thing out and soft lighting really makes a difference

accents change over time. so since people speak differently, different facial muscles develop, so people look slightly different at different times and places.

I heard part of it could be that things like braces and palate expanders earlier in childhood has stopped letting children develop mouths/chins/jaws in the way that they did before, but I can't be sure that's the reason.

so much of it is styling though, it has a much bigger impact thank you might think! from the way people shape their eyebrows to even trends around grooming hairlines, it’s so many things

Tbh I think it just has to do with beauty standards and trends in the era. But I totally see what you’re talking about. Maybe it’s part of our evolution as humans 🤷♀️

I've seen people photoshop old photos to current hair, makeup, eyebrow and clothing styles without changing the actual face and we really haven't changed at all.

It’s really just living habits. Quality of food and the type of food we feed our children have changed over time which affects development. Throughout history, we’ve seen that Human jaws were way wider prior to I think the agricultural revolution, and have gotten narrower over time because of eating soft food. That’s why we have complications like wisdom teeth not with little to no space in the mouth. The quality of food people ate in the 50s was overall better compared to today, people ate smaller portions, convenient fast food places existed, but they were mostly eaten on rare occasions, and the average American back then weighed far less than the average American today. Other living habits besides food, like proper sleep, also probably influenced their faces too. People in the 50s had technology, but not at our level where we have little addictive screens that emit blue light and disrupt our circadian rhythm by tricking our brains into thinking it’s still morning time.

The modern fashion industry has homogenized to the point that everyone looks like a cookie cutter. Back then, They did their hair and makeup and dressed to what looked good on THEM, with nods to what was in style- now everyone leans totally into whats in style alone. There are still a few hold-outs for individualism.
